Our first AAPI contest winner<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday we\u2019re going to talk about Yuri Kochiyama in just a minute. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born on May 19, 1921, Yuri Kochiyama set off into the world with her two<\/em> brothers, Peter and Arthur. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a child, she lived in California, where she<\/em> went to Sunday school and church. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the age of fourteen, she<\/em> attended San Pedro High School. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, she wrote for the school<\/em> newspaper and served as the first female student body officer. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a<\/em> cold day in December 1941, the Japanese Empire bombed Pearl Harbor,<\/em> affecting thousands of Japanese American families including Yuri\u2019s.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after she returned home that day, she witnessed her father<\/em> being arrested by FBI agents as a potential threat to national security.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Even worse, he was in poor condition, so after he was released, he died<\/em> the day after.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That same year, President Franklin Roosevelt signed<\/em> Executive Order 9066, forcing Yuri and her family to leave their home and<\/em> live in an internment camp for three years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although times were tough for<\/em> her, she would later become empowered by this experience to work for<\/em> change. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a protest in 1963, she met and became friends with the<\/em> African American activist, Malcom X. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her passion and courage helped lead<\/em> to reparations for Japanese Americans after World War II.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuri Kochiyama<\/em> supported several groups including political prisoners. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She died on June 1,<\/em> 2014. Even though her story ended, her legacy lives on. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
