Adding new features to a platform that\u2019s already being used &nbsp;&#8211; and loved! &#8211;&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by millions of teachers and students is always a risky move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we knew we were \u201cgetting it right\u201d when teachers jumped on board and quickly incorporated VR activities in their lesson plans to support engaging, student-centered instruction. While this was no surprise, it was encouraging to see that teachers understood our approach and embraced VR in such a positive way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRather than the VR being the sole component of this amazing educational tool, it is used to enhance engaging, interactive lessons. The VR experiences made my young students feel as if they were immersed in each location, resulting in a much firmer grasp of concepts and ideas. This is an enormously powerful tool that allows students to dig deep into concepts, root around, and pull out the knowledge they might have missed without this extraordinary experience. Virtual Reality should be used to increase student engagement.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 2. VR must be incorporated as part of a well-designed, pedagogically sound lesson. More specifically, VR activities should be used to build empathy and real-world exposure by immersing students in new experiences.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 3. Like all other Nearpod features, VR should be accessible from almost any device.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nearpod.com\/nearpod-vr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR features <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.nearpod.com\/market?view=npList&amp;id=684&amp;element=folder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR-enabled lesson plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have received a lot of positive coverage [<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/digits\/2016\/02\/11\/virtual-reality-learns-how-to-get-into-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">][<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/02\/25\/school-districts-teaching-through-virtual-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">][<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/news\/2016-02-23-what-is-virtual-reality-s-role-in-education-an-interview-with-nearpod-cofounder-felipe-sommer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] and tons of awesome feedback from teachers [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?f=tweets&amp;vertical=default&amp;q=nearpod%20vr&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]. But as with any new technology, there are several misconceptions about VR that we\u2019ve heard from teachers, admins, and parents, and we seek to address and clarify these below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-size: 18px!important;\"><em><strong>\u201cVR viewers isolate kids. Don\u2019t we want to promote collaboration and discussion?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When used appropriately, Nearpod VR experiences should not take more than 5-10 minutes of class. We recommend that students participate in VR activities as <b><i>part of<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a lesson, <\/span><b>not a replacement for instruction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the teacher, or the classroom experience. We see VR as another engagement and learning tool for teachers to add to their toolkit.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-size: 18px!important;\"><em><strong>\u201cKids don\u2019t need more screen time. VR will make them feel dizzy.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Incorporating VR in the classroom does not mean strapping a headset to your students for an entire class period. As mentioned above, <b>Nearpod VR experiences last 5-10 minutes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, if you\u2019re worried that the headset may make students feel ill, fear not! <\/span><b>Our VR activities work <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bsd220sunnyhill\/status\/715250355517267968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>with<\/b><\/a><b> or <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gorillalms\/status\/712660111769133057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>without<\/b><\/a><b> headsets.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-size: 18px!important;\"><em><strong>\u201cVR is only accessible to affluent schools, this type of technology will be too costly to integrate into most schools.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While new technologies are typically associated with high costs, <b>Nearpod VR only requires an &nbsp;internet connection and a device<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s it. Our headsets, which come for free when a school buys a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nearpod.com\/nearpod-vr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearpod premium edition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are a great way to enhance a VR experience, but are not necessary to experience Nearpod VR. We\u2019re confident that our multi-platform approach, the growing percentage of students in the US who own smartphones [<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/2015\/10\/29\/technology-device-ownership-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], increasingly high quality internet connection available in US public school districts [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/research\/special-reports\/state-of-edtech-2016\/k12_edtech_trends\/infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], and our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.nearpod.com\/market?view=npList&amp;id=684&amp;element=folder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ready-to-teach library of VR lessons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make <\/span><b>Nearpod VR accessible to schools and districts regardless of zip code<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We do recognize that not all schools have devices, connectivity, or a student population with internet access at home, so as part of ongoing efforts to increase access, we launched a grant program (January 15 &#8211; &nbsp;March 31, 2016) where we provide devices, Nearpod School edition, headsets, and VR content to qualifying schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-size: 18px!important;\"><em><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s no research behind VR improving learning outcomes.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although there\u2019s little formal research about incorporating the newest advances in VR technology in K-12 classrooms, it\u2019s clear from early teacher feedback [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teacherswithapps.com\/nearpod-is-venturing-into-virtual-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?f=tweets&amp;vertical=default&amp;q=nearpod%20vr&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] that <\/span><b>students are engaged and excited to learn during a Nearpod VR lesson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, there is a well established body of research in education that links student engagement to positive academic, social, and emotional outcomes [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=k3rf8_LgJQMC&amp;dq=student+engagement+research&amp;lr=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">][<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nearpod.com\/page\/pdf\/Measuring-Student-Engagement-with-Learning-Technology.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], and a growing body of research that reports positive impacts of virtual reality [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vhil.stanford.edu\/pubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">][<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-might-virtual-reality-change-the-world-stanford-lab-peers-into-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] .
